What I want to do: Turn diaweblog.org into a company. DiaWebLog is a IRC-blog interface I've been working for about two years. In the last month, I've rewritten it to support multiple channels and sites. My plan is to finish the prototype site and start hosting a small number of sites. Eventually, I'll run ads or charge for a premium service. In the future it may run on the AIM and MSN networks too. DiaWebLog is currently running on MESH's computer (at U of M). I need to get it off their computer before I try to commercialize it. So, I'm hoping you can help me. What I'm looking for: Temporary hosting for the prototype site on mimezine.com. The prototype site will host at most a couple hundred weblogs. If it outgrows mimezine.com, I'll move it to to another machine. DISK REQUIREMENTS: Low. The current site uses 8 MB total. New sites will be smaller. 100 weblogs would require less than 1 GB. BANDWIDTH REQUIREMENTS: Moderate. In the last three months, we've sent under 400MB of data per month. This was before I tuned the site to generate smaller pages, so we should use less bandwidth this month. The IRC bot receives a few MB a month. New sites should not generate as much traffic. I will monitor bandwidth usage as I add new sites. I can pay more if it gets to be more than 5 GB/month. If I use significantly more bandwidth, I'll set up my own machine. CPU REQUIREMENTS: Low. Pages are static. Our daemon regenerates a page when a weblog is updated. There are some CGIs. We're currently hosting DiaWebLog and other sites on a dual Pentium-II/200. SOFTWARE Python 2 (I'm using 2.2) Python Twisted (I'll just install this in my home directory) MySQL (with two databases) Apache - I'm using the RewriteEngine to redirect X.diaweblog.org to the right directory. The configuration isn't too complex. Webalizer - nice, not necessary Mailman - would be nice, but not necessary Email - *@*diaweblog.org can go to a local mailbox. DNS is hosted by ArborDomains. IRC - I won't run bots on irc.mimezine.org. The bot will run on freenode.net initially. It'd be great if I could use irc.mimezine.org for testing though. I can set up a mimezine diaweblog if folks want to try it out. Best case is that I outgrow mimezine.com this summer and move to my own machine. Worst case is Diaweblog doesn't take off, but at least DiaWebLog has a better home. What do you think? David -- David Helder - dhelder@umich.edu -
